Our Name Change

The name Marin Breast Cancer Watch has served us well for the past decade, but it no longer reflects what we are doing or what we are setting out to do in the future.

The unacceptably high rates of breast cancer are not just found in Marin County. The rates are increasing in the San Francisco Bay Area, in California, in the United States and throughout the world. In response, our programs and our influence have expanded beyond Marin.

The members of Zero Breast Cancer are committed to eliminating breast cancer. We are not passively “watching.” Our message is a call to action:

  • A call to resist becoming complacent or accepting of the increasing rates of breast cancer

  • A call for more research on the causes of breast cancer

  • A call to do everything we can to prevent and end this life threatening disease for everyone: women at risk, women with early breast cancer, with metastatic breast cancer, black, white, tan, old, young, daughters and granddaughters.

Our new name, Zero Breast Cancer, describes our dream of a world without breast cancer and recognizes that we cannot live our dreams without naming them.

Some may think Zero Breast Cancer is an unattainable goal but this organization has reached for the seemingly impossible before and accomplished it.

Zero Breast Cancer radiates possibility and it is within this framework of possibility that we will continue to work.

As we move into the next decade, the members of Zero Breast Cancer pledge to:

  • Be true to our mission

  • Ask and demand answers to the tough breast cancer questions

  • Accelerate the exploration of unknown causes of breast cancer, including environmental factors

  • Partner with researchers, with scientists, with health care providers and policy makers

  • Bring the community voice to research, public health and public policy advocacy

  • Be passionate mavericks

  • Make Zero Breast Cancer a reality

Zero Breast Cancer invites you to invest in the future by choosing to become an active part of this incredible organization. Please join us in making zero breast cancer a reality for the next generation of women.

— Janice Barlow, Executive Director

Mission Statement

Zero Breast Cancer is a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding the causes of breast cancer through community participation in the research process. We focus on identifying environmental factors and the role they play in the development of breast cancer at all stages of life and across generations.

Core Principles

  • Every community needs their originators and risk-takers—we are the pioneers of Community-Based Research in the Bay Area.

  • We bring together diverse perspectives on health and social issues.

  • We focus on how the environment affects breast cancer.

  • We accelerate discovery by bringing together experts, resources and information.

  • We actively pursue reducing breast cancer risk for the next generation.
